In the framework of Centro Ciência LP, 100 PhD scholarships are granted annually, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), to students from the Portuguese-Speaking African Countries (PALOP) and East Timor.
The PhD scholarships cover the scientific areas of the Consortia of Schools: Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Natural Sciences and Biodiversity, Health Sciences, and Marine Sciences.
All the procedures for awarding the scholarships are coordinated by Centro Ciência LP, in articulation with the Consortia. The Centre connects and coordinates three types of actors:
– The students, first as candidates and later as scholarship holders;
– The Higher Education institutions within the scope of the Consortia of Schools, either in the drawing up, launching, publicising and monitoring of the Calls for Applications, including the administrative procedures and the evaluating process, as well as the procedures for obtaining and contractualising the scholarships, ensuring the follow-up of the PhD students in the course of their studies;
– FCT, ensuring a timely and close relationship throughout the whole process, avoiding the need to deal with various entities.
The scholarship holders are properly supported during their training also through activities that include the organisation of annual meetings, thematic seminars/workshops, as well as actions for the acquisition of soft skills.
In 2020 – 2022, despite the pandemic situation, 8 tenders were launched.
